Did you know...?

The phrase "That's Greek to me" or "It's all Greek to me" is commonly used in English to indicate that you don't understand something. The idiom dates back to early modern times and appears in William Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar". Greek words sometimes cause confusion for English speakers: for example the Greek word "nee" actually means yes. And if a Greek person says "kátse" to you, they're not referring to a cat, but rather inviting you to sit down!

But even people with a good command of Greek need to be careful to avoid misunderstandings in their interactions with Greek people, especially when it comes to gestures. Nonverbal communication often has pitfalls that can have serious consequences. For example, if you want to use a gesture to illustrate the number five, please make sure not to hold your hand up with your palm facing the person you're talking to! In Greece, any gesture which involves showing your palm to someone or holding it up towards their face is considered to be a serious insult, so make sure the back of your hand is facing them, and your palm facing you.

FACT FILE Greek

Modern Greek (ελληνική γλώσσα) is spoken by some 13 million native speakers, primarily in Greece and Cyprus, though also in Turkey, southern Albania and southern Italy where it is a recognized minority language. Modern Greek is an official language in Greece and Cyprus and one of the official languages of the EU. Greek occupies its own branch of the Indo-European language family and stems from Proto-Greek which dates back to at least the 2nd millennium BC. Much of the vocabulary of modern Greek is derived directly from ancient Greek. The Greek alphabet, which has remained unchanged for almost 2,400 years, has 24 letters. Many people from English-speaking countries are familiar with Greek letters from math and physics lessons at school. Medical terminology is derived from both Greek and Latin. The modern Greek spoken in Greece today is comparatively uniform and only has a few dialects. A visitor to Greece who speaks Standard Modern Greek will therefore almost always be able to communicate with any Greek citizen they meet.
